Hello everyone! Happy new year!!
We are well into 2018 as we’ve passed the first half of the month! What?? How did that happen and where did the time go? I had initially planned on posting a round up of my 2017 beauty and skincare favourites but when I looked at my list, a lot of the products were the same products I’ve been using for years. So instead, I decided to set myself the task of picking out the top 10 from my list of favourites that really stood out to me over the past year.
I’ll try to leave links to any of the items mentioned here that are available online at the end of this post. So, lets get cracking.
1. Klairs Supple Preparation Toner
This is something i discovered in 2016 or maybe the year before that but I keep coming back to it. Its such a hydrating toner that contains nothing abrasive and it sinks so well into the skin. You can layer this product under other skin care products and make up. The consistency of this is thicker than a toner but thinner than a serum so there have been days I use 2 to 3 layers in place of a moisturiser.
2. Dr Jart Ceramidin Cream
I discovered this moisturiser fairly recently sometime in September 2017 but it has become a staple in my skin care regime. I use it as a night time moisturiser but it doubles as a day time one too. I’ve written a blog post on this if you’d fancy a read. I’d definitely be repurchasing this time and time again.
3. Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil
Another new discovery of 2017. I decided to take the plunge whilst at duty free back in March 2017 after hearing one of my favourite beauty bloggers rave about this product. Don’t curl back in fear if you’re someone with oily or acne prone skin. Oils are still good for your face, you just need to know which ones. They have 3 different types of oils targeted at different skin concerns and the one I use and love is the Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil (for dehydrated skin). For reference sake, I have an oily T-zone (combination type) and despite that I have dehydrated skin. I am someone who loves trying out new products but this is another one I see myself continuing to use and love this year.
4. Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil
I have not heard of a single person who tried this and had bad things to say about it. It is what it is and it does what it says- remove make-up, EVERY LAST BIT of it. It removes make-up like a dream and honestly when I use this, I don’t have to use a separate eye make-up remover as it gets all my eyeliner and mascara off. Massage it into the skin and rinse off with water, this product leaves no oily residue. I also love the packaging, it comes in a lovely see through purple bottle with a pump (what’s not to love, really). However. I have discovered something similar to this from the drugstore that cost a fraction of this product. I’ll be talking about it on my blog very soon.
5. Becca First Light Priming Filter
This is something that was so so hyped up when it was released last year. Every beauty blogger was talking about it and loving it and it was hard to know if it was worth it. I tried it on the back of my hand every time I went into Sephora but wasn’t quite sure what it did. This is one of those things ‘youtube made me buy’ and I must say, I did not really know if it was doing anything in the beginning. Then I started using this with my IT cosmetics CC cream or on its own (with some concealer and powder) and this made all the difference. It gives a subtle glow, a healthy lit from within. It’s something you wouldn’t notice right away but I only noticed it when I looked back at pictures or sometimes in the middle of the day, when I glanced at the mirror and my skin still looked healthy. More times than not, when I think back, this would be what I used that morning.
6. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream
Do not let ‘CC Cream’ fool you, because I put off buying this thinking it was ‘just another CC Cream’ till one of my besties literally forced me to get one. I would say it’s more of a light to medium (good medium) coverage foundation with the benefits of a cc cream. It truly is your skin but better. I use the darkest shade (YES, I SAID DARKEST!!) which is ‘Rich’. The darkest shade is too dark for me (I realised after using half a tube) and the second darkest called ‘Tan’ is way too light for me. Sadly this range only comes in 5 shades and they don’t have a very good shade selection. There was a lot of noise on the internet last year about this and IT Cosmetics has launched this product in 12 shades now (sadly there’s still nothing really in-between ‘tan’ and ‘rich’ but its a good start). I hope the extended range comes to Malaysia soon!
7. Becca + Jacyln Hill Highlighter in Prosecco Pop
Everyone who’s friends with me would have heard about the fiasco involving my Becca Champagne Collection Face Palette (yes it was dropped and yes everything in it smashed, and no we could not salvage it, oh and yes, it was a limited edition palette). However my sweet husband managed to track my fave highlighter from that palette and surprised me with it (that’s a different story). Prosecco pop is my all time favourite highlighter and the only one I ever use really. Its so finely milled and blends like butter (literally). It is a light medium gold with a warm undertone and slightly darker compared to the original Champagne Pop and for this reason I think it works for darker skin tones.
8. Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette
This is my go to palette for everyday use. It has some beautiful shades that are very pigmented and blends beautifully. I don’t think there is much else to say.
9. IN2IT Linestay Flexi-Tip Eyeliner (Very Matte, Peel-Off)
It’s cheap, it works, it makes doing a winged look that easy.
10. Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in shade ‘1993’ (comfort matte)
This is truly a nude for someone who has darker skin. Its the best nude I’ve found in the market and it’s one of those lipsticks that looks different on everyone (think MAC Whirl, though that was a little too nude and I could only pull it off if I had a bold eye look). This has a brown undertone with very little pink in it. On fairer complexions, this would look a lot more brown than on someone with a darker complexion. This shade comes in their comfort matte formula but I wouldn’t call this a matte finish, it has more of a creamy finish and the pigmentation is incredible. I’m at the end of my second tube (I need to get a back up).
11. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in shade ‘Lolita II’
So, I am cheating a little bit here. I’m ending with 2 lipsticks and going over my top 10 things but I had to include one matte lipstick! This is another nude in true matte formula that dries down quite nicely. It is more of a mauve pink and suits almost all skin tones. For a matte formula, it does not last the whole day like some liquid lipsticks do but topping it up is not a problem. It is not too drying on the lips and theres an extensive colour range. I am also on my second tube of this colour. As you can see I’m a creature of habit when it comes to lip colours. Maybe 2018 will be the year that I branch out a little.
